What a long, strange trip it’s been. My favorite line from the Grateful Dead. Sorry I haven’t written in a long time, 2024 has been full of problems. Cataract surgery in January, and…Where to begin? I had a very strange dream the other night about Scout (aka Airstream travel trailer) rolling uncontrollably downhill. It was a premonition.
To catch you up. Scout has a mysterious water leak somewhere that has caused the plywood subfloor to rot. The leak was supposedly repaired in November by Blue Compass RV/Airstream in Colfax, NC. Before my departure to Florida. NAUGHT.
Lesson learned, never take the service department at their word. Stay two nights within driving distance, so if the repair isn’t repaired you can return.
Upon arrival in Florida the floor continued to be soft and spongy only getting worse.
On January 10, I drove Scout to Orlando and Blue Compass RV/Airstream looked it over and gave me an estimate of $12,000.00. YIKES!
Good News! Progressive Insurance offers the only full-value replacement if the trailer is totaled and covers repairs like water damage. It is my home, and just like your sticks and bricks, insurance covers water damage.
Progressive is great. They came to look at Scout, agreed with the estimate and sent me a check. In preparation for the repairs, I removed all my personal belongings, the dinette, mattress and all the cabinet drawers. Progressive is covering a storage unit in Stuart, Florida in addition to hotels. Thanks again Progressive.
The repair requires all the lower cabinets, shower, and bed are removed to replace the plywood subfloor and vinyl.
Now for the bad news.
I took the trailer back to Orlando Blue Compass RV on February 1, as agreed. I advise them I will return on March7 to pick-up. A month seemed like a reasonable time frame. NAUGHT.
I had planned a trip to Cary, NC while Becky and Chuck were touring Morocco. That planned trip seems now indeterminate.
After calling and leaving voice messages, I got an email from Blue Compass, No work has been complete, or even started. Needless to say, I won’t be going back to Florida on 3/7 as planned.
RV Dealers are into sales but not service. Blue Compass has a D- rating with the Florida Better Business Bureau, and it is Florida! I plan to light up social media starting next week.
So stay tuned for updates, or the lack there of.
OY! Sorry to hear about all the hassles, but at least it sounds like your insurance is working as it should. Good luck on the repairs!!
