HAPPY NEW YEAR — 6 YEARS AND COUNTING

HAPPY NEW YEAR. Hard to believe I am beginning my sixth year on the Road2Reinvention.

RECAP

In 2016 I retired from Washington D.C., and went to Florida to housesit for the summer, and contemplate what to do in retirement. The Road2Reinvention had been percolating in the back of my mind but a summer in steamy Florida help me make up my mind.

In late summer I drove to Austin, TX to visit my pal Ruth and purchase a 19′ Airstream. I wanted the 20′ but couldn’t find one used, so Scout #1 was on the road for a year. The difference between 19′ and 20′ is HUGE! See the counter space in the kitchen, and the double sink only in a 20′.

In the fall of 2017, my dream 20′ came on the market in New Hampshire. I sold the Scout #1 and bought Scout II. We have been happy ever since, it’s all about the counter space and a double sink.

My first year in Scout #1 we (Maggie and I) traveled from Austin, TX to Sacramento, CA. VIA Tuscon, Palm Springs, San Clemente, Malibu, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Vallejo.

Alaska friends Diane and John drove Scout #1 from Sacramento, CA to Raleigh, NC, and helped me find a buyer. Airstreams retain their value, a year later I sold Scout #1 for $1,000 more than I paid. I could get $10,000 more today for Scout II, but where would I live?

I picked up Scout II in New Hampshire, drove and ferried to Long Island for the rest of the summer. When the leaves began to change I headed south to Florida. I officially became a snow bird in the winter of 2017.

BIG MISTAKE!

Don’t do what I did by not keeping a permanent log of travels, and now almost six years later I am trying to reconstruct my adventures. For you newbies out there use the RVWizard app, to plan and retain your travels, you can download into an Excel spread sheet.

In 2018, I traveled back to FL and then visited New Orleans, Plains GA (to attend Sunday school with President Jimmy Carter), and back to Long Island. President Carter and Rosalynn are inspirations to us all, certainly me.

Along the Road2Reinvention, we (Maggie and I) have visited lots of old friends, and have made lots of new friends. A blessing on the road. Yes, there are times we are lonely. Especially during this past year and a half, but haven’t we all been a bit lonely?

I am gratiful I am on my journey and not trying to work from home. I loved my past life in Washington, D.C. But I am incredibly grateful for this road.

Ain’t retirement GRAND!

I am still rebuilding my webpage, and hopefully using a new plugin to send my updates directly to your email, you can of course unsubscribe at any time. I hope I am not boring you?

Looking forward to 2022, I am spending this winter in Green Valley, AZ, just south of Tuscon, and later Palm Springs, CA where many Alaska and golf pals live. I am looking forward to visiting Esther Davidson in Casa Granda, and Kelly, Kathy and Harriet in at Kelly’s house in Yuma. A union women’s reunion with Kathy, Kelly and Harriet we worked together for the Alaska State Employees Association/AFSCME. Before I left Alaska in 1995 for the lower 48 and my second reinvention.

HAPPY NEW YEAR! I hope to see all my west (left) coast friends along the way. So please stay tuned.

Your adventures are inspiring. Maybe one day I’ll make the leap. Happy New Year, safe travels, and good health in 2022.

    Happy New Year, Alison…
Hope you can make it back to Longboat Key one of these days. I want you to meet the love of my life, Adrienne Scott, a life-long golfer from Canada. We purchased the smallest house on LBK (400 paces from the Gulf of Mexico) and will celebrate our 27-month anniversary together on 2/1. Like you, Adrienne loves the game, probably because she has never experienced the rough on any golf course. She’s hit more 150-yard poles than anyone I can remember. All is well here and we’d love to see you and your Maggie.
    Regards,
    Bill

Wow! That’s great. Time flies. How is Maggie?

Retirement becomes you. It is the best gig ever. We get paid to not go to work! Your adventures are fantastic and what I like seeing the best is that big Alison smile. Hugs to you and Maggie – hope she kicks that danged Valley Fever quickly and completely.
