TENTS OF MANY COLORS

Sorry for being so quiet, I made a change of host providers for my webpage and lost a bunch of data. Needless to say Road2Reinvention is under repair.

But, I thought it was high time to catch up with folks. Maggie and I have been enjoying our summer campground hosting and planning for our big trip cross country. After two years on the east coast, we are planning a “Westward Ho” trip across country in September.

This summer we spent a month each at Kiptopeke VA (April), Kerr Lake Recreation Area NC (June) and First Landing VA (July), and we are on our way to Pilot Mountain, NC for August.

First Landing is still our favorite campground for hosting, the beach and the ability to shop at Trader Joe’s. What’s not to like beach, and beautiful big campground sites.

Hosting involves cleaning fire pits, picking up trash and generally being friendly and helping campgers. Our golf cart makes this work very easy. For a week Maggie’s BFF Lola was here to help, she isn’t that much help but did enjoy riding in the golf cart with Maggie. They both would rather stay in the air conditioned office while I worked.

I am amazed at how camping tents have evolved. The last time I was in a tent was after being marooned at Johnston Bay, Alaska. It was a two man tent, with three of us in it sister Kerry, pilot and step-father Erv and me. Three adults, two sleeping bags and no book or deck of cards, it was a long couple of nights before we were rescued. You can read about that trip at an earlier blog, click here.

The tents at First Landing are varied. I particularily like this canvas one, giving “Glamping” it’s true meaning. Then there was Toni sleeping in her Prius with a tent attached to the back. You will NEVER get me in a tent again. I like my mattress and 3″ memory foam pad.

GLAMPING

Next stop is Pilot Mountain on the western side of North Carolina. It will be a change from the coast, no beach but there are mountains and hopefully swimming and tubing in the Yadkin River. “Pilot Mountain State Park centers around the iconic geologic knob that serves as a beacon to the surrounding Piedmont.” For my hiking friends you really should come visit.

In September we will return to Cary and visit family for the last time in possibly a year or more!  Then back to Ashville for visit with Carol and Steve, former CA friends who moved to NC just as the country locked down. Our short-term goal is to arrive in Denver, CO the first of October for visit with nephew David wife Camilla and their two young boys. I am also going to catch up with Barb Thorn who I knew in Anchorage in the 1980s, and a college friend from Eugene now living in Longmount.

Sister Kerry and brother-in-law Buzz will be biking at Carbondale, CO and we will meet there and travel south to visit National Park. Then on to Santa Barbara for Thanksgiving with Michelle and Duane. My plan is to winter in Tucson and Palm Springs and work on my golf game.

I hope to write more often on my travels, and hope you will stay with me via Road2Reinvention.net.

Stay tuned.
